A carbon footprint is a calculation of the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an individual. This questionnaire is part of the project 1,5 degree compatible living in the Nordic conditions: attitudes, lifestyles and carbon footprints, funded by The Icelandic Centre for Research (RANNIS). The collected information will only be utilized in non-profit academic research and will not be sold nor revealed for any other purposes.

Climate literacy

On the second phase of our research a softGIS method based electronic diary to capture the lifestyles and consumption habits of the studied consumers is introduced. This diary-type second round questionnaire is longer and will provide both the participants and the research team with more detailed information about their carbon footprints. Participation to second phase is completely voluntary.

How this study works?

These suggestions will help you to decrease your carbon footprint. Actions matter!

By eating meat just once or twice a week you can reduce your carbon footprint up to 1 tCO₂e each year!

Eat less meat

Emissions from producing a new car can be more than 10 tCO₂e. Direct emissions of average driving (14000km/year) are almost 4 tCO₂e/year so living car free reduces your carbon footprint a lot!

No vehicle, great!

You can try reducing the number of flights you take by shifting to other travel modes or avoiding unnecessary trips. You can also support policies aiming to increase the aviation taxes.

Reduce flying

Great that you didn’t fly at all in preceding 12 months. One return flight from Stockholm to Bangkok is around 4,5 tCO₂e!

No flights, great!

You can decrease your carbon footprint by flying less. One return flight from Stockholm to Bangkok is around 4,5 tCO₂e!

You can decrease your carbon footprint by reducing the amount of the goods you buy. If you want to make a bigger change, you can support laws that prohibit 'planned obsolescence'.

Buy less goods and repair

Good that you don’t have pets. A dog can cause emissions of more than 0,5 tCO₂e each year.

If you want to make a bigger change, support policies to reduce the use of fossil fuels in electric energy and heat production in your country.

Renewable electricity, great!

Could a heat pump be an option to heat your home? A heat pump can decrease your carbon footprint.

How about a heat pump?

By switching to renewable electricity you could reduce your carbon footprint by 0,5 tCO₂e each year (100m² home).

How about switching to renewable electricity?

You can decrease your carbon footprint by driving less and shifting to public transportation, walking, or cycling. Driving just 10km a day can cause around 1 tCO₂e/year.

Reduce driving

An electric car can save even 3 tCO₂e and a bio fuel car 1,5 tCO₂e of driving emissions, compared to a gasoline car (14000km/year). Although, the emissions from producing a new car can be around 10 tCO₂e.
